The word “PAPERMOON” is composed from Washi ( Japanese paper )
and Tomo ( moon ) which is part of my name.
Information on my works and classes about the creation
of paper lamps would be introduced by myself Tomoko Fuyuno.

Washi (Japanese style Paper)

I grew up seeing old-fashioned products made from Washi. It was just an everyday thing that I took for granted without realizing it’s usefulness and beauty.
My opinion completely changed one day. It is the time when I learned that Washi is being used for the restoration of cultural assets in famous art museums around the world. Washi is very strong and resilient. It is also very beautiful !
These are the reasons why my opinion changed. It is really amazing that we can still read many books which are in the Shosoin Temple after hundreds of years.
I now appreciate Washi and I realize that I should be proud that it is a product of Japan. I have being diligently making lamps and using Washi everyday and I have come to realize how wonderful this paper really is.
Therefore, I decided to combine the old with the new. The history and beauty of Washi comes together with the strength and modern lines of metal.
Sometimes people ask, “What is it made from?” If somebody asks this, I am always happy to tell them.

Metal

At first, metal’s role was just to provide support for my lamps. I just started off by using metal for the reinforcement of the frames of my creations. However, I soon realized that the metal became the most important element in the creation of each new lamp. The beauty of working with metal is that when heated it becomes very pliable and can be bent and shaped into many amazing structures. Each of these shapes is unique and I feel great satisfaction and pride in the creation of each and every one of them. Washi now plays a “supporting role” to the metal and adds beauty and softness to the lines of the lamps.
I developed a fondness for metal much like the feeling you have when you meet someone who you know will be a very special part of your life!
